A few more words about this course

This course examines the documented evidence behind racial disparities in care quality: pain management, diagnostic timelines, and discharge patterns. It moves from population-level data into the cognitive mechanics of implicit bias, then into real-time bedside recognition and a practical advocacy toolkit, so Board Certified Patient Advocates can act on evidence rather than instinct.
Throughout this course you will explore:

  • Racial and ethnic disparities in pain treatment, diagnostic speed, and discharge timing are documented in peer-reviewed research, independent of insurance status or socioeconomic factors
  • Implicit bias operates through automatic cognitive processes that function even in providers who hold no conscious prejudice
  • Bias shows up in real time at the bedside, in body language, in symptom dismissal, and in the language used in the electronic health record
  • Evidence-based language, structured documentation, and a clear escalation pathway turn advocacy into an actionable intervention.
