What you'll learn

This course equips Board Certified Patient Advocates with the data, frameworks, and assessment tools to recognize family caregivers as a distinct population facing measurable health and economic disparities. Through four self-paced modules, you will examine the demographic realities of unpaid caregiving, quantify its physical and financial costs across diverse populations, and develop actionable advocacy strategies grounded in PACB Domain competencies.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Quantify the scope of unpaid family caregiving in the US using current AARP and CDC data, including the $1.01 trillion economic value and 63 million caregivers
  • Identify demographic disparities in high-intensity caregiving across racial, ethnic, geographic, and socioeconomic populations, with attention to JEDI implications
  • Assess caregiver health, financial strain, and social consequences using validated tools such as the Zarit Burden Interview and Modified Caregiver Strain Index
  • Apply PACB Domain 1 (Client Assessment) and Domain 2 (Equity and Access) standards to integrate caregiver assessment into your BCPA practice
  • Develop advocacy strategies that address structural barriers to caregiver equity, including rural access deserts, urban time poverty, and wealth extraction

Dr. Trina L. Coleman, BCPA

Dr. Trina L. Coleman is a Ph.D. physicist and Board Certified Patient Advocate (BCPA) whose career bridges the gap between scientific rigor and human-centered care. As the founder of Coleman Comprehensive Solutions and the STEM Skills platform, she built The Care Academy to bring evidence-based JEDI continuing education to the patient advocacy profession. Her research-backed approach draws on AARP, CDC, and National Alliance for Caregiving data to equip advocates with the tools to recognize caregiver disparities and act on them. She is also the creator of the A Care Journey app and the author of Journal of Your Journey: A Caregiver's Guide to Giving Care.
